A COMMUNITY OF MISSIONARIES
Mission Church is a part of the Church of the Nazarene. The mission of the Church of the Nazarene is to make Christ-like disciples in all nations. We strive to express the grace and compassion of Jesus Christ to all persons, along with our personal commitment to Christ-like living. As a church, we are actively called to participate in the ministry of Jesus Christ — reconciling the world to himself.
Mission Church has been a part of the San Diego community since September 1914. The church was started when a group of Jesus followers from First Church of the Nazarene in San Diego started a Sunday school class in the eastern part of the city called East San Diego Nazarene Sunday school. The goal was to create a community that would reach and serve more people in San Diego.
The group continued to grow as they built a building on the corner of University Avenue and 41st street and became established as University Avenue Church in January 1915. The church remained in this location until 1978 when the church purchased a plot of land to develop into what would become Mission Valley Church of the Nazarene. The new construction was completed and celebrated in 1983.
In all of the Church’s history, Mission Church of the Nazarene has never been defined by the space it occupies, but by the call to be missionaries to our community. In 2008, the church voted to change the name to Mission Church of the Nazarene as a reflection of our missional philosophy. The church has had the opportunity to help establish other new churches in the San Diego area as well as produced missionaries called to serve around the globe.
We invite you to join us!
WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe in one God-the-Father, Son and Holy Spirit (three distinct persons sharing a common nature).
We believe that God has inspired the Old and New Testament Scriptures and that they contain everything we need to know to be saved and to live as followers of Jesus Christ.
THE FALL OF MAN
We believe that all humans are born in sin, and subject to commit acts of sin.
HOPE IN CHRIST
We believe that those who refuse to confess their sins and follow Jesus Christ are lost and without hope. Our hope comes from Christ who saves us from sin.
We believe that Jesus Christ is able to save everyone from their sins; that everyone who confesses their sins and follows the Lord Jesus Christ is forgiven, born again, and set free from the power of sin.
We believe that after men and women are born again they may live lives that reflect the character of God (become holy).
LIFE OF HOLINESS
We believe that a person can know their sins are forgiven and that their lives reflect the character of God as the Holy Spirit confirms this in their heart.
RETURN OF CHRIST
We believe that Jesus is coming again, that the dead will be raised, and that all humanity will stand accountable before God.
It has been my joy and passion to serve Jesus as a lead pastor for the past 28 years. This exciting ministry journey has allowed us to walk with churches through the vision casting process from coast to coast. My wife Hydie and I feel especially at home when in the field on mission trips, sharing the love of Jesus, and planting new ministries. Northwest Nazarene University, Nazarene Theological Seminary, and Trevecca Nazarene University are the places of which I have learned and grown as a professional. We love San Diego and are blessed to call Mission Church of the Nazarene home. Hydie and I have been married for 31 years and have three grown children. Our most favorite time in the world is spending time with family.
